EA's NHL franchise hasn't just had the best console generation. After bypassing the very first year of the PlayStation 4 entirely, NHL 15 triggered out of the gate using a pretty weak attempt. This in and of itself is pretty normal for sport matches, but they tend to improve as the creation rolls on. Regrettably, that never occurred for NHL. NHL 21 is the exact same game as NHL 15, with a few new bells and whistles sprinkled throughout. The problem is that the groundwork set by 15 wasn't particularly great.
The presentation has seen a larger overhaul than previously, with pedals that were tweaked, a few brand new UI changes, and a fresh commentary package. The UI changes, while still jarring, seem fine. The relocation of stats and the scoreboard will take muscle memory while the stadium rework makes the atmosphere of the games much livelier to get used to. The same can't be stated for the commentary. Gone are the dulcet tones of Doc Emrick.
